It is so easy to explain and show you why Everyday Mathematics is not helping our kids. Sure test grades may have gone up, but for me that’s a false positive reading (more on that in a later post). If you didn’t read my initial post as to why The National Mathematics Advisory Panel believes Everyday Math is wrong for the country, then perhaps a little show and tell will convince you. First, you can hit this link (Everyday Math) to see a Power Point Presentation I uploaded that goes through the truly awful algorithms taught in Everyday Math. Notice how the “math geniuses” that thought this program up refuse to teach the standard algorithms that we learned and instead waste our kids’ time with longer and less efficient ones (BTW - math geniuses didn’t invent Everyday Math that “honor” fell to the University of Chicago’s Education Department which I heard is disbanded).
If you still don’t have the time to flip through the Power Point, check at this screen shot of the Lattice Method of
multiplication which requires your children to not only understand this convoluted grid, but they actually have to draw it. However, if you think this isn’t bad wait until you see division, but fear not Everyday Math has a plan for your kids over the long term - it is called a calculator. Seeing the Lattice Method demonstrates why the US is falling behind other countries in math.
We need to recall Everyday Math as soon as possible and if you vote for me I will work hard to get this removed from our schools.

[...] trust me enough, my personal analysis of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel and a link to the Lattice Method of multiplication which a supporter pointed out includes a math error [...]

I am a private tutor and U.K. Maths is also going down this route (except in some private schools where they are not bound by the National Curriculum). This is causing huge anxiety amongst children and parents and leaves teachers such as myself to pick up the pieces and dry the tears!
